We hosted an impactful panel discussion titled Make Room, Take Room, Create Room, where we explored the true essence of building inclusive spaces within the creative industry. The event, held at Generator Amsterdam, brought together inspiring voices who shared personal stories and professional insights on advocating for underrepresented perspectives and creating space for self-expression.
Our founder, Indy Koele (they/them), spoke on the importance of moving beyond tokenism in diversity initiatives, emphasizing, “Diversity isn’t just checking boxes—it’s about prioritizing voices that aren’t always heard.” At red., we’re dedicated to making space for BIPOC and queer creatives to find the visibility and support they deserve.
• Jo Sarah (she/her), founder of Umaversity, shared her journey of creating safe spaces for women and artists. Her reminder: “There’s enough space for everyone.”
• Tabitha Bakonga (she/her), community manager at Omroep ZWART, encouraged courage in self-advocacy, stating, “Every time you don’t stick up for yourself, you’re losing yourself in between.”
• Benjamin Conteh (he/him), founder of Life Dreamers, highlighted the importance of finding allies and mentors: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
• Self-Compassion is Key: Indy reminded us that building confidence takes time. “Stand still and look back at what you’ve already achieved.”
• Lead with Love and Curiosity: As Jo Sarah wisely put it, “Why not act with love? It takes less energy than acting with hate.”
The evening was filled with powerful conversations on navigating creative spaces, claiming professional ground, and fostering environments where diverse talents can thrive. Together, we explored what it means to step into our own competencies, make room for others, and recognize when to step back to let other voices shine. Let’s continue building spaces where everyone has the chance to be seen, heard, and valued.
