At red., we’ve always believed that true progress in Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) stems from authentic conversations and meaningful connections. While companies and individuals are making strides in these areas, the road to equity remains a shared journey that requires collaboration, reflection, and commitment.
To foster this spirit of connection and learning, we hosted our very first D&I Discussion Table, bringing together professionals from diverse fields to share experiences, exchange ideas, and discuss the challenges and opportunities in advancing equity.
On January 14, 2025, we gathered around the table with incredible thought leaders: Farah Ramezani, Jaleesa Clows, Jeremy Flohr, Stephanie Pot, Suzanne Rastovac, and Tabitha Bokonga. The evening was not just an event but a powerful reminder of the potential we unlock when we come together with a shared purpose.
As the conversation unfolded, several key themes emerged, reflecting both the progress we’ve made and the challenges we continue to face.
✨ Positive Aspects of D&I Progress
- Strengthening Connections: Horizontal collaboration among allies and experts has fostered stronger networks and shared knowledge.
- Accountability Through Commitments: Over 400 companies have signed the Diversity Charter, a significant step toward measurable action.
- Youth-Driven Change: Young creators are infusing D&I initiatives with energy, awareness, and innovation.
- Cultural Restitution: The Dutch museum sector’s restitution policies for colonial collections are setting an example for justice and reconciliation.
- Values in Business: More organizations are realizing that embedding values into operations is essential, not optional.
⚠️ Challenges in D&I
- Acknowledgment Without Action: While awareness is growing, funding and meaningful efforts often lag behind.
- Unequal Burden: Marginalized individuals are frequently tasked with leading D&I efforts, adding to their emotional and mental load.
- Burnout: Many D&I professionals face significant stress due to systemic barriers, polarization, and unrealistic expectations.
- Undermining Practices: Greenwashing and diversity-washing dilute genuine progress and create skepticism.
🔑 Lessons & Takeaways
- Collaboration Is Key: Progress thrives on partnerships built around shared values and trust.
- Commit Real Resources: Empty words or surface-level actions won’t drive change—dedicated funding and support are essential.
- Address Burnout: Supporting D&I professionals with mental health resources and equitable workloads is critical.
- Start Imperfectly: Even small, imperfect steps are a step toward meaningful change.
This dinner reminded us of the importance of intentional dialogue and collaboration. It also highlighted the work that remains to be done to ensure a truly inclusive future. At red., we are committed to continuing these conversations and creating spaces where diverse voices can thrive.
