On July 1st, we celebrate and remember the abolition of slavery in Surinam and the Dutch Antilles in 1863. Keti Koti, which translates to “broken chains” in Sranantongo, is a day to reflect and to honour those who were enslaved. We need to acknowledge the painful history and celebrate freedom and equality.
What can you do during this day?
There are several celebrations and events to attend during Keti Koti. This is a day filled with parades, moving ceremonies, music, dancing and food. But above all, it’s important to remember the history we have and to keep on educating ourselves, because there’s is still a lot to work on in our country.
*Keti Koti is not yet an official holiday in the Netherlands, but some companies offer the option where employees can select their own holiday based on their own believes.
